Nylon Vs. POM

The distinction between POM material and nylon is as follows:

Processing dimensional stability: POM better than nylon

In wet conditions: nylon absorbs water and deforms in size.

In terms of material strength: nylon is stronger

Density: Nylon is 1.14, POM is 1.4.

In high temperature resistance: nylon is good, up to 120 degrees

Coefficient of friction: POM is small

In terms of impact strength: POM is good

In terms of abrasion resistance: POM is good

In short, nylon water absorption, wear-resistant ordinary, good strength, good temperature resistance.

POM rigidity is good, wear resistance is good, dimensional stability, strike is good;

What is POM ?

POM (polyoxymethylene resin) definition: polyoxymethylene is a no side chain, high density, high crystallinity of the western linear polymer. According to the different chemical layouts in its molecular chain, it can be divided into homo- and copolymerization of formaldehyde. The distinction between the two is: homopolymerization of formaldehyde density, crystallinity, melting point are high, but good thermal stability, not easy to be dissected, wide range of processing temperatures (about 50 ℃), better stability of acid and alkali. It is an engineering plastic with excellent comprehensive skills. Have good physical, mechanical and chemical functions, especially excellent friction resistance.

Commonly known as race steel or grab steel, for the third largest general engineering plastics. Suitable for the production of wear parts, transmission parts, and chemical industry, instrumentation and other parts.

What kind of material is "nylon"?

Nylon (Nylon) is chemically known as polyamide (PA), a term for polyurethane fiber, i.e. nylon, the world's first synthetic fiber. It is a general term for thermoplastic resins that contain repeating amide groups in the main chain of the molecule. Thus there are many types of nylon not referring to one substance alone. This also includes aliphatic PA, aliphatic-aromatic PA, and aromatic PA. of these, aliphatic PA is so diverse, so widely produced, and so widely used that its designation is determined by the specific number of carbon atoms in the synthetic monomer.

Nylon characteristics

1. Has excellent mechanical properties, high mechanical strength, good toughness. Nylon as a synthetic fiber, its most prominent advantage is that wear resistance is higher than all other fibers, 10 times higher than cotton abrasion resistance, 20 times higher than wool, slightly added to the blended fabrics in some polyamide fibers, which can greatly improve its abrasion resistance; when stretched to 3-6%, the elasticity of the recovery rate of up to 100%; able to withstand tens of thousands of times the folding and not breakage.

2. Excellent self-wetting, good friction resistance, nylon has a very good self-wetting, the coefficient of friction is small.

3. Has excellent heat resistance, excellent weather resistance.

4. Excellent electrical insulation properties, nylon volume resistance is very high, high voltage, is an excellent electrical, electrical Insulation Materials.

5. With water absorption, nylon water absorption, easily lead to changes in product size and performance. However, the end of the main chain of polyamide molecules contain terminal amino and carboxyl groups, under certain conditions have a certain reaction activity. Therefore, through the blocking, grafting, blending, reinforcing and filling methods such as chemical and physical modification to overcome the large water absorption and performance changes.

The application of nylon

There are two main applications of nylon, the birth of the early mainly used as textile raw materials. This can be seen from the word nylon in many of our clothing labels. In World War II due to nylon is often used for paratroopers parachutes, military uniforms and other war materials, so that led to nylon stockings, which is a much loved by women's favorite objects to become a quota of rations, so its price rose so much that the bottom of the poor women had to use a pen to outline the seams in their legs similar to nylon stockings in the shape of a fake, and jokingly referred to as the "magic stockings! and jokingly called them "magic stockings".

On the other hand, nylon is not only non-toxic and lightweight, but also has excellent mechanical strength, good abrasion resistance and good corrosion resistance. So nylon was used to manufacture engineering plastics to replace steel, iron, copper and other materials in the early 1950s. Therefore, nylon engineering plastics are often used in the production of wear-resistant parts, transmission structure, household appliances parts, automotive parts, screw to prevent mechanical parts, chemical machinery parts, chemical equipment. Such as turbines, gears, bearings, impellers, cranks, instrument panels, drive shafts, valves, blades, screws, high-pressure gaskets, screws, nuts, seals, shuttles,, bushings connectors and so on.

Is nylon or POM better for making plastic gears?

POM and nylon are two common materials for plastic gears, and many friends always have doubts when choosing plastic raw materials. Should we use nylon as the material? Or POM?Which is the right choice to achieve the maximum cost-effective?

Nylon and POM big competition

Nylon has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, especially impact resistance, abrasion resistance, resistance and temperature resistance, is much talked about.

1) Excellent mechanical function. Nylon has high mechanical strength and good resistance.

2) Good self-lubrication and conflict resistance. Nylon has good self-lubrication, low coefficient of friction, and long service life as a transmission part.

3) Excellent heat resistance. Such as nylon 46 and other high crystalline nylon, high heat distortion temperature, can be used for a long time at 150 ℃. Nylon reinforced by glass fiber, its heat distortion temperature reaches more than 250 ℃.

4) Excellent electrical insulation function. With high volume resistance and breakdown voltage, nylon is an excellent electrical and electrical insulation material.

5) Excellent weather resistance.

6) Water absorption. Nylon has a high water absorption rate, saturated with water up to 3% or more, which affects the dimensional stability of the parts to some extent.

POM gears

POM, polyoxymethylene, also known as "Race Steel", "Race over King Kong!"

(1) High mechanical strength and rigidity;

(2) Highest fatigue strength;

(3) Environmental resistance, good resistance to organic solvents;

(4) High resistance to repeated impacts;

(5) Outstanding electrical properties;

(6) Outstanding recovery;

(7) Outstanding self-smoothness and abrasion resistance;

(8) Excellent dimensional stability;

(9) Comparatively low working temperature, only 70 ~ 80 ℃;

(10) No flame retardant grade; not resistant to hydrolysis.

How to choose?

1, Wear resistance: when your product does not have many requirements, only wear resistance characteristics, choose POM is cost-effective, because POM wear resistance is better than nylon, the price is cheaper.

2, Wear resistance and temperature resistance: when your product needs wear resistance and temperature requirements, you should choose nylon, because POM's temperature resistance is very poor, can not meet your requirements.

3, Impact resistance, and water touch: when your product may be moved often, require impact resistance, and water contact, such as the tank cover on the car, this time you have to choose nylon, because POM is not hydrolysis resistant, although its impact resistance is very good.

4, Hardness and abrasion resistance: when your requirements are good hardness, low price, no requirements for temperature, choose POM.

5, Resistance and rigidity: for resistance and rigidity are required information, nylon is more appropriate.

6, Load: medium and low load, pick POM.

NYLON gear

Utilization

Nylon: Nylon can be used in all walks of life, but in the following professions are used Z more: car parts (because of its rigidity, heat resistance, good resistance to conflict); office furniture; mechanical parts (good corrosion resistance); electrical and electronic appliances (excellent electrical function).

POM: POM is used in electronic and electrical appliances, mechanical parts, UV resistant parts, especially in plastic gears, pulleys, bearings, car interior parts are used most.
