Technical Q&A

1. General description of machining
Unreinforced thermoplastics can be machined with high-speed guillotine tools. Reinforced materials should be machined with hard alloy tools. In any case, sharp tools without any problems should be used. Plastics have low thermal conductivity and therefore need good heat dissipation. The best cooling method is to dissipate the heat with plastic chips.

2. Dimensional accuracy
Stress-free annealing of semi-finished products is a prerequisite for ensuring dimensional accuracy. Otherwise the heat generated by the machining will certainly lead to the release of machining stresses, which can lead to deformation of the product. If the amount of machining is large, an initial annealing should be carried out after the main machining has been completed so that the thermal stresses that have been generated can be eliminated. For materials with high water absorption (e.g. polyamides), it is necessary to test the moisture content before machining. The machining errors for plastics are larger than for metals, and in addition to this the coefficient of thermal expansion has to be taken into account as well.

3.Turning
If the requirements for surface quality are particularly high, the tool should be made in the shape of a wide-ended fine turning tool. Used to cut off the knife car should be made into the appropriate shape to avoid the bulge caused by the extrusion of residual material. Processing of thin-walled and flexible workpieces, it is best to use the grinding into the shape of the knife turning tool.

4. Milling

5.Boring

Compared to untempered plastics, tempered plastics have a lower impact toughness but higher processing residual stresses compared to tempered plastics, and therefore break easily. Such should be heated up to approx. 120°C before drilling wherever possible (heating time: approx. 1 hour per 10 mm section). This method is also recommended for polyamide 66 and polyester.

6. Sawing
Sawing usually involves sawing a thicker workpiece with a thinner tool. Unnecessary heat generated by friction should therefore be avoided, and it is preferable to use saw blades with well sharpened teeth and a wide saw path.

7. Tapping
Threads are best processed with a threading cutter. Use double teeth of the flower knife can avoid flying edge. It is not recommended to use a plate tooth, because it may be necessary to make up a cut when returning to the knife. Silk push usually have to leave some processing allowance (depending on the material and diameter, reference value: 0.1mm)
