POM Vs.NYLON

Abstract: POM materials and nylon materials are both polymer materials, but they have different chemical structures, properties and application

1. Chemical structure

POM material, also known as polyoxymethylene, is a crystalline polymer whose molecular chains are formed from formaldehyde molecules through a condensation polymerization reaction. The arrangement of formaldehyde molecular chains in POM materials is very regular, forming highly crystalline regions. These crystalline regions give POM materials high hardness, high strength and wear resistance.

Nylon material, also known as polyamide, is an amorphous polymer whose molecular chains are formed from amino acid molecules through a condensation polymerization reaction. The amino acid molecular chains in nylon materials are arranged in a disordered manner, forming amorphous regions. These amorphous regions give nylon materials good flexibility and elasticity.

2. Performance

Physical properties

POM material has the characteristics of high hardness, high strength, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and low friction coefficient, making it widely used in manufacturing wear-resistant parts, bearing gears, etc. At the same time, POM materials also have excellent electrical properties and thermal stability and can be used to manufacture electronic components, connectors, etc.

Nylon material has excellent flexibility, elasticity and impact resistance, making it widely used in manufacturing soft hoses, conveyor belts, auto parts, etc. In addition, nylon materials also have good corrosion resistance and excellent electrical properties, and can be used to make insulators, cable sheaths, etc.

Mechanical behavior

The mechanical properties of POM materials mainly include high hardness, high strength, wear resistance, etc. These properties make it widely used in manufacturing high-load, wear-resistant mechanical parts. For example, POM materials can be used to manufacture machine tool guide rails, bearing gears, etc.

The mechanical properties of nylon materials mainly include flexibility, elasticity and impact resistance. These properties make it widely used in manufacturing mechanical parts that need to withstand impact and bending. For example, nylon materials can be used to make flexible hoses, conveyor belts, auto parts, etc.

3. Nylon has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, especially in terms of impact resistance, wear resistance, toughness, and temperature resistance.

1) Excellent mechanical properties. Nylon has high mechanical strength and good toughness.

2) Good self-lubricating and friction resistance. Nylon has good self-lubricating properties and a small friction coefficient. As a transmission component, it has a long service life.

3) Excellent heat resistance. Highly crystalline nylons such as nylon 46 have a very high heat distortion temperature and can be used for a long time at 150°C. After nylon is reinforced with glass fiber, its heat distortion temperature reaches above 250°C.

4) Excellent electrical insulation properties. Nylon has high volume resistance and high breakdown voltage resistance, making it an excellent electrical and electrical insulation material.

5) Excellent weather resistance.

6) Water absorbency. Nylon has high water absorption, and the saturated water can reach more than 3%, which affects the dimensional stability of the parts to a certain extent.

4.POM, polyformaldehyde, is also known as "race steel", "better than King Kong!"

1) High mechanical strength and rigidity;

2) The highest fatigue strength;

3) Good environmental resistance and resistance to organic solvents;

4) Strong resistance to repeated impacts;

5) Good electrical properties;

6) Good recovery ability;

7) Self-lubricating and good wear resistance;

8) Excellent dimensional stability;

9) The working temperature is relatively low, only 70~80℃;

10) No flame retardant grade; not resistant to hydrolysis.

5.Application options:

(1) Wear resistance:

When your product does not have many requirements and only requires wear resistance, choosing POM is the most cost-effective, because POM has better wear resistance than nylon and is cheaper than nylon.

(2) Wear-resistant and temperature-resistant:

When your product needs to be wear-resistant and has temperature requirements, you should choose nylon, because POM has poor temperature resistance and cannot meet your requirements.

(3) Resistant to impact and contact with water:

When your product may be moved frequently, requires impact resistance, and is in contact with water, such as the water tank cover on a car, you should choose nylon at this time, because POM is not resistant to hydrolysis, even if it has good impact resistance.

(4) Hardness and wear resistance:

When you require good hardness, low price, and no temperature requirements, choose POM.

(5) Toughness and rigidity:

Nylon is more suitable for materials that require both toughness and rigidity.

(6) Load:

For medium and low loads, choose POM.
