PPS Polyphenylene Sulfide Processing Of What We Should Pay Attention To?

Thermoformers are available in a wide range of PPS material options, with sheet and coil grades sold in pure glass-filled and impact-modified versions. Because of its high fluidity, PPS material provides more detail in molding than most polymers, and it allows for relatively sharp corners to be formed in vacuum molding, so parts can have corners with small inside radii without the need for more expensive pressure molding processes.

PPS plastic has tensile properties very similar to polycarbonate. Glass-filled, 1/8-in. For example, PPS sheet can be molded to a depth of 6 in. with good consistency and repeatability. Larger depths can be achieved if there is a neat slope or if the part has a wider radius. To date, PPS panels as large as 5 x 9 feet have been formed.

Although process parameters vary from tool to tool and part to part, PPS sheets should be heated uniformly in a high-temperature oven at 320 to 329 C (610 to 625 F). Infrared ovens are best suited for this task.1/8 in. PPS sheet processed in a tool without a cooling system typically goes from initial heating to molding to final cooling in 60 to 90 seconds. This is equivalent to polycarbonate and is shorter than ABS or PVC. When PPS material comes out of the oven before molding, it typically has a more consistent and predictable appearance, thickness and sag than ABS or hdpe.

Know It All - Thermoformed PPS materials have excellent tensile, flexural and impact properties that are maintained during processing. PPS flakes with 30% glass reinforcement (made from PPS 1130L0) are virtually unaffected during processing. The flexural modulus of the molded material is only 8% lower than that of the unshaped sheet, while the tensile modulus is about 25% lower.

PPS materials are thermoformed using aluminum tooling at a much lower cost than the special steel tooling typically required for injection molding.PPS thermoforming tools are typically preheated to approximately 200 C (390 F) and reach operating temperature and full size within a few cycles. After machining, PPS parts can be trimmed with carbide drills on conventional CNC milling machines and machined using the same milling machines, sanders, saws, lathes, and other tools used for metal or wood.

They can also be assembled by a variety of thermal, mechanical, and adhesive methods, such as ultrasonic welding, bolting, and bonding with epoxies, methacrylates, urethanes, or other common contact adhesives.PPS materials can be coated using traditional topcoat systems and printed by gravure, flexographic, pad, offset, screen, digital, and other printing methods. It can also be laser marked and easily metallized.
