What engineering plastics are suitable for precision machining methods?

The materials used in CNC machining plants for precision workpieces are divided into two categories: metal and engineering plastics. Metals include aluminum alloy, steel, copper, various carbide, etc.; CNC machining plant common materials in addition to metal materials is engineering plastics, plastic materials have metal irreplaceable insulation.


Engineering plastics refers to mechanical equipment and engineering structures in the application of plastics, they have metal-like properties, with high strength, stiffness and toughness, common machining of engineering plastics are mainly the following:

1. Common mechanical CNC machining plastic material: nylon (PA \ polyamide)


Characteristics: high strength, wear-resistant, fatigue-resistant, oil-resistant, water-resistant, mold-resistant, non-toxic, water-absorbent

Application: general machining parts in the friction reduction and transmission parts: bearings, gears, cams, guide plates, tire curtains, etc.

2. Common machining plastic material: PC (polycarbonate)

Features: better overall performance, good impact toughness, good dimensional stability, colorless and transparent, small water absorption, good heat resistance, creep resistance and electrical insulation is also good, not resistant to alkali, ketone, amine, aromatic hydrocarbons

Applications: machining gears, racks, worm gears, worm gears, bulletproof glass, capacitors, etc.

3. Common machining plastic material: ABS (co-polyacrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene)

Characteristics: good overall performance, impact resistance, good dimensional stability, easy plating, easy machining, light weight, opaque.

Applications: friction and wear and transmission parts, gears, impellers, mechanical equipment shell, machining Structural parts, etc.

4. Common machining plastic materials: PMMA (plexiglass, polymethyl methacrylate)

Characteristics: high transparency, low density, high strength, good toughness, UV and atmospheric aging resistance, low hardness, poor heat resistance, easily soluble in organic solvents

Applications: mechanical processing of some transparency and strength of the parts: signs, transparent pipes, optical lenses, etc.

5. Common mechanical CNC processing plastic materials: polytetrafluoro (F-4, PTFE)

Characteristics: very superior chemical corrosion resistance, "plastic" king of the name. Good performance in high and low temperatures, low coefficient of friction, self-lubricating. Very low water absorption, low strength, high viscosity after heating.

Applications: chemical pipelines, pumps, lining, electrical equipment isolation protection screen, corrosive media filtration of machined parts.

6. Common mechanical CNC processing plastic material: epoxy (Glass fiber)

Characteristics: high strength, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, good insulation, easy to machine, the price is high!

Applications: plastic molds, precision gauges, electrical and electronic components, etc.

7. Common machining plastic material: bakelite CNC machining (Bakelite)

Bakelite CNC machining parts with good mechanical strength, anti-static, insulation and other excellent characteristics, suitable for PCB jigs, pads, fixtures and other applications.

Bakelite CNC machining parts disadvantages are easy to chipping during processing, CNC machining on the tool wear and tear, the processing process will produce dust.


In addition to the above plastic materials suitable for machining, common machining of engineering plastics are: POM machining parts (paraformaldehyde), PU processing (polyurethane), PI (Polyimide) processing, PCTFE machining parts (polychlorotrifluoroethylene), UPE machining parts, etc., in the design of the drawings to select the material, according to the use of the environment of the plastic machining parts, with the requirements of the selection of the appropriate engineering plastics.
