ABS is a polymer made by the copolymerization of three monomers: Acrylonitrile (23-41%), Butadiene (10-30%) and Styrene (29-60%), which is known as Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene, or ABS for short.

The manufacturing method of ABS is divided into blending method and grafting method, blending method ABS was first developed by the U.S. Rubber Company in 1945, while grafting method ABS was first synthesized by the U.S. Marbon Company in 1954. The synthesized ABS has four types: medium impulse type, high impulse type, ultra-high impulse type and heat-resistant type.

ABS copolymer of three monomers in the general ratio of 20:30:50, as long as the proportion of three, polymerization methods, particle size, you can produce a series of different impact strength, flow characteristics of the ABS varieties. For example, by increasing the content of butadiene components, the impact strength of ABS can be increased, but the hardness and fluidity will be reduced, and the strength and heat resistance will be poor. If the content of butadiene in ABS reaches more than 50%, it is called high rubber powder, which is commonly used for toughening modification of ABS and PC/ABS.

ABS was initially developed on the basis of PS modification. Due to the unique advantages of toughness, rigidity and hardness, its dosage is comparable to PS and its application range has far exceeded that of PS, thus it has become a kind of plastic species independent of PS. Early on, ABS was classified as a category of engineering plastics, but with its rapid development, the output quickly approached its parent PS, so from 2000 it was classified as a category of general-purpose plastics, becoming the fifth largest general-purpose plastic varieties.

Properties of ABS

⒈ general properties:

Peculiar Mechanical Properties:

　　ABS has excellent mechanical properties, its impact strength is excellent, can be used at very low temperatures; even if the ABS products are destroyed will only be tensile destruction and not punch level destruction, which is the write-up of the high toughness of the ABS.ABS has excellent abrasion resistance, good dimensional stability, and oil resistance, can be used for bearings under moderate loads and speeds.The creep resistance of the ABS is bigger than that of the PSF and PC but smaller than that of the PA and POM. ABS flexural strength and compression strength is poor among plastics. mechanical properties of ABS are greatly affected by temperature.

Thermal properties:

　　ABS heat distortion temperature of 93 ~ 118 ℃, products can be annealed to improve about 10 ℃; ABS in -40 ℃ can still show some toughness. Therefore, ABS can be used in the temperature range of -40～100℃.

Singed electrical properties:

　　ABS has good electrical insulation and is virtually unaffected by temperature, humidity and frequency, so it can be used in most environments.

Be careful with environmental properties:

　　ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salts, alkalis and many kinds of acids, but it can be dissolved in ketones, aldehydes, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and will produce stress cracks by the erosion of acetic acid, vegetable oils, etc. ABS is poorly weathered, and is susceptible to degradation under ultraviolet rays; after being placed outdoors for half a year, the impact strength will be reduced by half.

Processing characteristics of ABS

　　ABS with PS, is a thermoplastic with excellent processing properties, can be molded using common processing methods.

　　ABS melt viscosity is high, its mobility is better than PVC and PC, but worse than PE, PS and PA, and POM and HIPS are similar; ABS flow characteristics belong to the non-Newtonian fluid, its melt viscosity and processing temperature, shear rate has a relationship with the shear rate is more sensitive; ABS melt cooling and curing speed is faster.

　　ABS is thermally stable, not easy to appear degradation phenomenon, thermal decomposition temperature is greater than 250 ℃. Although the thermal stability of ABS in the inert gas is very good, but in the state of heat, thermal oxygen will trigger the degradation reaction, so it is necessary to add antioxidants, specific for example: the main antioxidant 1010, auxiliary antioxidant 168, etc. ABS in the shutdown, it is necessary to clean the screw and barrel in a timely manner, so as not to avoid thermal decomposition for a long time.

　　ABS belongs to the amorphous polymer, there is no obvious melting point, but can be melted and processed in the temperature range of 217 to 237 ℃.

　　ABS has a high water absorption rate, and not drying will produce defects such as silver lines and bubbles on the products. Therefore, ABS should be dried before processing, so that its water content is below 0.4%. General products drying conditions: temperature 80 ~ 85 ℃, time 2 ~ 4 hours; for special requirements of the products (such as the need for plating products), drying conditions are: temperature 70 ~ 80 ℃, time 18 ~ 24 hours.

　　ABS products in the processing of easy to produce internal stress, the size of the internal stress can be tested by immersing the product into the glacial acetic acid; if the internal stress is too large, or the product requirements absolutely can not have stress cracking phenomenon, it should be annealed, the specific method is: the product is placed in the 70 ~ 80 ° C hot air circulating drying oven for 2 ~ 4 hours, and then cooled to room temperature can be.

　　ABS thermal stability is better, but at 265 ℃, the material in the barrel of the residence time should not exceed 5 ~ 6min; and at 280 ℃, the material in the barrel of the residence time should not be more than 2 ~ 3min; if there are accidents in the production process, the barrel temperature should be reduced to 120 ℃, and then clean up the barrel. Some ABS products in the first production out of no problem, but may produce brown or yellow stripes in the storage period, which may be due to barrel overheating or retention time is too long and caused.

　　The molding shrinkage of ABS is low, generally 0.4 to 0.7%.

ABS plastic is mainly used in the following areas:


⒈ shell material: widely used in the manufacture of telephones, cell phones, televisions, washing machines, radios, tape recorders, photocopiers, fax machines, toys, kitchen utensils and other products shell.


Piece of machinery parts: can be used for the manufacture of gears, pump impellers, bearings, handles, tubes, pipe fittings, battery tanks and power tool shells.


Automotive parts: specific varieties of steering wheels, instrument panels, fan blades, fenders, handles, armrests and so on. Dashboard commonly used PC / ABS as a skeleton, the surface is then covered with PVC / ABS made of film.
