Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials Introduces VMX Series of Detectable Thermoplastics

Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials has announced the global launch of a new family of thermoplastic polymers: the VMX material portfolio, which can be visually, metal and X-ray detectable. This new group of materials replaces Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials' well-known MD materials. For many years, MD materials have been used as metal-detectable plastic components in food processing and packaging equipment, meeting the widest range of detection needs in the global food market. However, increasing demands for greater product safety and productivity have prompted Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials to improve the performance of its inspection portfolio.


VMX is a portfolio of detectable, food safe plastic materials designed to support foreign material control programs in the food and pharamaceutical processing and packaging industries.


Developed in collaboration with food manufacturers and detection technology OEMs, VMX plastics offer the optimal combination of detectability, compliance, and performance.


High detectability - These bright blue engineering plastics are detectable in three ways (Visual, Metal, X-ray), with successful detection of particles as small as 2mm.

Regulatory compliance – VMX products are food grade plastics with FDA and EU 10/2011 approval for use in food processing. All materials come with migration test documentation.

Performance – Great wear resistance to prevent contamination of foodstuffs. The materials are resistant to high temperatures and chemicals used to clean-in-place/sterilize-in-place.



Visual, X-ray, & metal detectable plastics for food processing(1)

Most processors use calibration tools to set up their production lines to detect metals, as detection results vary depending on the type of food and detection technology and the processing environment (temperature, vibration, electrical noise, etc.). Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials incorporated this approach into its thinking and was the first to offer this tool for plastics.The VMX calibration tool enables processors to calibrate their inspection parameters and ensure detection of VMX materials.
